Can a 49mm lens cap fit my 50mm lens?

The problem is that you are confusing the focal length of the lens with the filter diameter (which is also the size of the lens cap). For many years Pentax designed most of their wide angle, standard and small telephoto lenses to accept 49mm filters/lens caps.
The standard filter sizes in use for interchangeable lens cameras varied by brand. Typical sizes were 48mm (Canon), 49mm (Pentax), 52mm (Nikon + many other brands), 55mm (Minolta, later Canon models + many other brands), 58mm (many brands). If the lens does have a Ø symbol engraved on it it will have a number next to it, that is the filter diameter/lens cap size. Otherwise you will need to test the cap size by screwing a fliter into the thread or trying caps of different sizes.
